Israel Launches Nationwide Electronic Visa System, Expands Digital Entry Procedures for Travellers

Israel has taken a major leap in border digitalisation with the nationwide launch of its new electronic visa (ETA-IL) system, introduced on January 1, 2025, marking a key milestone in the country's broader border-modernisation initiative.

Overview

The new platform operates in tandem with the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA-IL) programme for visa-exempt travellers, together forming a unified framework for digital entry management. Officials say the move will simplify visa procedures, improve travellers' screenings, and reduce congestion at airports and land crossings.

eVisa-B2 Pilot Programme for Visa-Required Nationals

Israel’s new ETA-IL B2 applies to Indian and Sri Lankan nationals who require a visa to enter. It allows short visits for tourism, family, business, medical treatment, or study.

Applications are made entirely online with a 100 NIS (≈ €27 / $28) fee, and most approvals are issued within 10 business days.

The visa’s maximum validity (up to 90 days) is determined by the consul, while the authorised stay upon arrival (also up to 90 days) is determined by border control.

ETA-IL for Visa-Exempt Visitors

Visitors from visa-exempt countries must now obtain an ETA-IL before travel. The authorisation, valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. It must be requested online 72 hours before departure and costs 25 NIS (≈ €7 / $7).

Officials say both systems enhance security, simplify processing, and support Israel’s broader “Digital Borders” vision.

Positive Response and Future Plans

The dual digital entry systems have received favourable feedback from travellers and tourism agencies, who have praised the simplified processes and prompt response times. The online platforms have been described as efficient, transparent, and user-friendly, marking a clear improvement over traditional visa procedures.

As of October 2025, both systems remain fully operational, with the ETA-IL pilot programme showing positive results. Expansion to new countries is expected soon, solidifying Israel’s commitment to secure, efficient, and technology-driven border control.
